New Allotment

Well I signed for my new plot on Saturday and so far the biggest challenge has been the weather. I should of know better than expect the weather in Manchester to be any good :(

This is my first plot and it doesn't seem in to bad condition. It hasn't been used for 2 months as the previous owner has had to move from the area. All of the plots on the site come with a greenhouse, shed and a compost bin. There is also a pallet compost bin as well. However both of these bins have been left uncovered and have weeds growing all over them so will need to go through this and empty the bins to get some insulation in them to speed the process up.

Saturday

The plot was left in a bit of a messy condition with fences and glass scattered across the site. The greenhouse and shed also have lots of rubbish in them. With the constant rain my main job on Saturday was to clean these areas which I did :) I really wanted to dig over the soil in preparation for my spuds but the weather just wasn't right for it.

I also bought some seeds from the allotment shop and the local gardening centre;

- Potatoes - 3 varieties

- Peas

- Runner Beans

- Dwarf Beans

- Tomatoes

- Peppers

- Chilli

- Sweetcorn

I have sown the tomatoes, peppers, chilli and sweetcorn in the greenhouse along with some onion sets which were kindly given to me by my new neighbour.

I did harvest some of the rhubarb from the plot and had a beautiful rhubarb crumble :)

Sunday

Once again the weather was awful yesterday so I still couldn't dig over the soil however I did dig out a lot of the old plants that were in and were no longer any use, including some very old Brussels sprouts.

On a down side I had some bad news from my neighbour on the other side that the previous gent had a big problem with horsetail, so this is something that I will just have to deal with and keep on top off.

As I now have some sheeting I can now cover over approx half of the plot and concentrate on a smaller area.

So my first weekend has been pretty eventful and I have realised just how much I need to learn to even have a chance!!!!!
